I would have to say Navratilova, Monica Seles, Chris Evert, Justine Henin, and Steffi Graf are the 5 best women's players.

if you just look at titles, then navratilova is the best for sure. i mean 167 single titles (18 gs) and 178 doubles titles (31 gs) speak for themselves. awesome collection. furthermore she had won all gs in singles and doubles. awesome again.

but there are still other players holding different records.

steffi graf 377 weeks nr. 1 in a row. (navratilova "only" 331)
furthermore graf won as the only player ever the golden slam. awesome. just crazy these girlies^^.
so she is one of 3 players, who could win the real slam (maureen connolly and margaret smith). navratilova "just" won the false grand slam but the real slam in doubles.

margaret smith is still holding the grand slam record with 24 titles.

so i think i don't make a decision. for me martina navratilova, steffi graf, chris evert (although she lost many big finals), margaret smith, helen wills moody and suzanne lenglen are the greatest ever.
just awesome their stats.

justine henin will consort with them, i'm sure. maybe when she would win wimbledon first time.

Yes. You can count the best women players on one had. I did here that Gibson was good during her time. If the Williams get their act together by being present on tour more, they they can start to make more noise too.

Perhaps her statistics were not computed during the open era?

She won Wimbledon 20 times (singles, doubles, mixed) and has 39 Grand Slam titles to her name. She's also from Long Beach.

Anyone ever hear of Renée Richards? He/she had a sex change and sued the U.S.T.A. to be allowed to play the women's draw at the U.S. Open. As a woman, she was ranked as high as 20 in the world.
