Agassi and Sampras go too far...

Talk about anything related to the ATP and WTA tours.

And just when you think this had completely run it's course...

Sampras says he's 'saddened' by Agassi jibes

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Pete Sampras says he still hasn't shrugged off Andre Agassi's imitation of him as a bad tipper during the Hit for Haiti exhibition on Friday night.

"Mostly, this just bums me out," Sampras told the newspaper. "It makes our relationship uncomfortable now... It saddens me."

"We've done this before, the imitating each other. He usually just sticks out his tongue at me."

The 14-time Grand Slam champion could not say whether the incident would have a long-term effect on their relationship. "Time will tell," said Sampras. "I like Andre. I always had great respect for his game. What happened is regrettable. It is a very awkward situation."

In an interview with ESPN's Rick Reilly earlier in the week, Agassi said he had texted Sampras asking if he could apologize personally but had not yet received a response.

Pete will ALWAYS be the man in my book. My favorite player and I'll always be a fan, but to his response, I only have this to say.........STOP BEING SUCH A BABY.

Are you kidding me? "It makes our relationship uncomfortable now... It saddens me." Really Pete? It "saddens" you? Cmon dude, you gotta have thicker skin than that. You'd think a guy that was one of the most mentally tough clutch players of all time, a guy that could second serve 125mph on break point to win 14 majors, wouldn't let something so little bother him.

I've said worse and have had worse said to me by my kid's nanny. "You're a bad tipper". Oooooh, the horror! I think the right play for Pete would've been, "we got caught up, we were both a little wrong, andre & i have always respected one another and it was just a bad situation. i'm looking forward to the next charity event w/ him." Simple.

Would have been a nice comeback to that :)

Pete has really taken this to heart... perhaps there's more to the joke we're not aware of..

Anyone who's read Agassi's book, does it say much about Pete's tipping incident?

I don't think there's anything more to the story with the tipping incident.
The thing is that there are some people who just can't take most types of 'jokes' that are aimed at them. They get defensive and just can't get past it. To them there's no light-hearted humor in the joke, it's just a plain insult.
So they tend to feel insulted no matter how big or small the incident, and take it much more to heart especially if that 'insult' has come from someone they may have previously regarded as a friend.

Sampras falls in this type of category.

I mean did you guys notice Pete's reaction after Agassi said "I don't ......have any money...wait..I've got a dollar"
Sampras was bouncing that ball Djokovic-like trying to compose himself, shook his head in a type of resignation manner, took a couple of gulps and then only was able to serve. And that 'serve' was directed straight at Agassi.
So to us the tipping incident is a minor insignificant thing which one can just laugh off, but to Sampras this is clearly something hurtful which he can't just overlook.

That just happens to be the way this guy is wired, that's all.

No one likes to be called cheap. Big picture, yeah, it's totally insignificant, but still, the "cheap" insult is sharper than most others.

Of course all of this is magnified many times over when the insult is thrown at a multi-millionaire with a reputation to protect -- and even worse, when such information is documented in a best selling book.

For good reason or not, I believe Sampras is genuinely pissed.
