Finally a time warning for Nadal but another serve to the backhand saves it

Some good moments from Federer but it's another loss nonetheless. If and it's a big if, Nadal somehow loses at RG he will still be there or there abouts.

its the same old story on clay.

but fed should be able to take some positives out of that one. He made nadal work on clay, so he knows he can compete with him. Also had a great look at 1-1 all to break but didnt, so that third set could have easily been feds.

I think this loss will actually give fed some confidence to know that he can still hang with nadal on clay. especially after that beat down in miami.

another thing to not, that i think was the big difference besides fed not converting on break points, is the first serve %. Nadal served at 80% for the match and above 90% in the third set. While fed was around 64%. That in my opinion allowed nadal to be a lot more agrressive and comfortable out there.

Good match to watch nonetheless

Yeah it will. I think he will use Nadal matches as a benchmark for how well he's playing, the win at ATP finals was probably big for him to prove he can still win. And today he took a set and made him uncomfortable so it shows hes still got it. And to be honest he's getting at least to the RG semis.

Would anybody else have liked to see him use more backhand slices?

I love him coming over it on faster surfaces, but i thought he could have used some more backhand slices today

Well Rafa doesn't have to push the serve to the lines when he goes to the backhand, it is such a honey pot for him to keep going there. Even though he is quite right to do it Federer must get so frustrated by it and more to the point that he cannot counter it consistently.
