Grass Court Warm Up's

Talk about anything related to the ATP and WTA tours.

I think indoor tennis is great too. Consistent ball bounce, the echo of your otherwise weak strokes  etc... I like it too.

I personally prefer a fast outdoor hard court. :P

I guess it's just a matter of personal opinion. I think strategy should all come from the tennis (or at least as much of it as possible), not from how nice the day is. I much prefer a match where the winner is dictated by their tennis ability alone and not on whoever gets screwed up by the elements the least.

But I also don't think all tennis should be indoors. Obviously outdoors tennis is great too when conditions are good. Funding permitting, it'd be nice to see all the big tournaments have at least one indoor court so when the final comes round, if the weather isn't that great, we can bring it indoors and watch a high quality match instead of a relatively bad one

"tennis ability" includes making necessary adjustments to conditions. Wind exposes bad movers, wind demands greater sense of timing, wind demands patience, wind demands strategy adjustments and so on.

How are these not tennis abilities?

Because I feel they are totally unecessary 'tennis abilities'. Why do professionals put such a premium on silence during points? Surely being able to concentrate and play well with noise is also a tennis ability that some players can cope with better than others?

So footwork is now deemed "unecessary 'tennis ability'"

I know exactly what you trying to say. However I do not agree with you.

Well I do always politely ask my opponent to hit the ball in my hitting zone. And if he doesn't...

Sure, if you can adjust to the wind and play well in the wind, then you'll also be able to play well without wind, so it's very good practice. Still, for the fun of it I prefer playing without wind.

its nice to see a grass court...now maybe they can accommodate the players with big serves and the ability for 1-2 punches with the correct balls and courts...baseliners should not be winning on grass

I hate the term "grass season". It's THREE tournaments, and you can't even play all three because two of them happen at the same time.

Such a shame, really, because I think you'd see a lot more variety in the game if there were as many grass court tournaments as there are on clay.

courts cost too much to maintain...watering, cutting, reseeding each year, etc. hard courts just need to be installed and there is virtually no maintenance costs.

Playing on an indoor court without wind eliminates footwork?

I just feel weather factors are mere distractions, whether I'm playing or I'm watching pros play. If they can be factored out then better. :)

Hey! I didn't say that ;) ... but you "sorta" did. So the "turnaround" doesn't work here, ha! :P

never played on real grass here I'm afraid (there are only a few courts in the country I know of), we do have quite a few outdoor artificial grass courts (including one tournament) but it's the real opposite of real grass - it's the slowest court I ever played (although there are a few new artificial turf courts where I haven't played yet which have a reputation of being extra fast)

I see your points about indoor tennis, but tennis was designed, and originally played, outside. on grass 8) so basically since the game's inception the weather and wind has been a element of the game.

There are 2 brothers who play local tournaments in my area who are quite good (top-level club players) and both dress like Federer and look very much like Federer out on the court. They have the same service motion, one-handed backhand motion, etc. It is actually quite fun to watch :)
