Federer serving less than 50% 1st serves in final set, he has handed plenty of chances to Gulbis to break, and he does so again.

Fed deserves to lose after throwing in a game like that after Gulbis was on the ropes.

A lot of it has to do with Gulbis's retrun of second serve. He does what we call in TS3 double trigger risk  and makes them with Norberto like consistency. That makes Fed try too much on first serve - and overdo it.

Horrendous finish by the World Number 1.

All credit to Gulbis, a very complete performance, hopefully he can keep this going after nearly blowing it.

The stats were very similar except for Feds 52% first serve percentage against Gulbis with about 70%.

Agreed though it was down to the quality of the Gulbis return.

Gulbis admitted he was very scared to win and was literally shaking.

He sounds a lot like Marat when he talks.

Fed better hope for some matches in Estoril next week.

Every time it is more evident that federer only has interest in the GS, is a shame.

Someone in this thread mentioned de Bakker being better on Clay.

I'll say this again, don't know why, but clay works for Gulbis way better then hard. Especially movement. He moves great on Clay.

As I predicted, if Fed will not put lots of first serves in - he is toast.

Oh please

You want to tell me he traveled to Rome to lose to Gulbis in his first match?

Excuses.

He got outplayed.

He got pressured on his second serves a lot and that made his first serve (over 70% first set) go down. He had to go for a bit more because of the way Gulbis returned.

Can we ever give credit to Feds opponents?

Gulbis is the male Hantuchova. He chokes, overuses the dropshot and is one of my favourite players. 7 match points for fcks sake!!

De Bakker has picked up a minor injury in this match. Hence his retirement and poor quality movement in this game.

Well done by Gulbis. Seeing his history he could well eat a double-bagel in the next round though :P.

Let me ask you something: Gulbis is 21 right? ....did Federer never choked at 21?

It's not a conscious thing. When he was scambling as though his life depended on it at 5-4 I don't think you could say he wasn't interested.

He couldn't step it up at 5-5 but Gulbis played in sets 2 and 3 and thoroughly deserved it.

When did he ever got double bageled? ....altho you have a point, a big party for Gulbis tonight will result in lackluster performance....for sure.
