BTW Gulbis is a set away from QF, taking first set 6-1 from another tournament favorite and best clay court player (not counting Nadal with healthy knees) ALBERT RAMOS-VINOLAS!

This is an unbelievable run for Gul! Beating 3 of the best players in a tournament in a raw!

Yeah way to go! Excellent prediction.
Is this the same de Bakker that got bageled and breadsticked by Nadal last week?!
Nadal owns everybody on clay but still......
anyway, great run by de Bakker so far in this tourney(Barcelona). Could cause a few more upsets?

Its going to sound rather patriotic of me but de Bakker vs Nadal wasnt representative for his level. He has beaten higher ranked players before and told the Dutch press he was very nervous for his match with Nadal which resulted in that result. I think thats understandable and quite deadly versus that Nadal. Im sure this result versus Ferrero is a sign of things to come.

Floris, I think we both know that de Bakker will never win a title...let alone win Gulbis. There are no "things to come" :P

Unless by things you mean loses. :P

I just got in and have watched a bit of this match.
Obviously I haven't seen the first set so I can't comment on that, but here in the 2nd Gulbis is going toe-to-toe with tabasco sauce.
He missed a gazillion break points just now but is still going for his shots and using that drop shot of his, for the most part, quite effectively.
But this kid sure does hit a heavy ball! I mean Verdasco is no mug in the power department either, but Gulbis just murders the ball.

Oh yeah. He is probably THE hardest hitter on the tour at the moment. And the drop shots are spectacular, driving Verdasco mad. He just broke the racket ....of his foot!

I am really surprised on how well Gulbis moves and plays on Clay. Really good.

Obviously Verdasco is a higher caliber player.....especially on Clay....but I liked what I have seen from Gulbis today. I think this is a positive match for him. He kept his cool and played thruout the match, simply got outplayed.

Congrats to Verdasco, he played well today.

Only 1 out of 9 break point chances converted for Gulbis. That really hurt him.
Verdasco, on the other hand, played the big points much better.
