:p

Seriously though, I don't even know how these 2 guys make consistent contact with their forehands.

Looks like they both just flail away at their FH...neither of them hold the racquet upright when they take it back

At least it's consistently ugly. Because of that you can't really say they just flail. :P

Aye - a deserved win - when it came to seizing break point-chances, and defending his own, he did very well. Murray seemed to be playing his old game - defensive yawn material - when it came time to get aggressive, Gulbis upped his own game, it was too late.

I'd like to see Gulbis go all the way now....think he can do it?

If he can win the next match - yes. That's been the problem: the win AFTER the quality win.

A rather big win considering that he prevented a comeback from Andy but no one will argue if someone says he's got the weapons to defeat a very pusher style Andy.

A big win would definitely be defeating Delpo (if he makes it to the QF) who is playing with the same kind of weapons.

I dont agree. DelPo, Berdych type is easier for Gulbis to win than Murray/Rafa type. To me, this is a MUCH bigger win then Delpo...

His problems were always beating consistent guys, the hard hitter type is what he wants, his type of game, and when he is one - he might just be the best at it.

Well Delpo Tsonga Berdych on fire, I don't see how Gulbis would be above what we've all seen about the best those can produce.

Plus what I meant is Murray didn't really play gutsy as he improved since last season. So, yeah sure, hitting hard off rather spinny defensive shots is very spectacular, but unfortunately for Gulbis, we ve seen that he's been struggling way more against flatter guys.

Gulbis on Fire > then Berdych, Deplo and Tsonga on fire. When he is on he runs through you...

Can he sustain it longer then the other guys? Nope. Not yet at least. But his best is surely on par and I say better then these guys.

Show me where he was struggling "MORE" against the flat hitter guys. ;)

Well berdych is out. Tsonga is in recovery. Delpo he's all right. He won 500 points last week so even if he doesn't reach semi-final he won't lose big. Plus it seems Delpo went out on R32 round, so this year he's actually earning points. I'm talking about points because Gulbis himself wants to be at least TOP 5.

P.S. IMO Gulbis's family is rich. So he probably doesn't want to win big and earn a lot of money. That's why he flashes once in a while and then disappears into the shadow. Or better yet, He play very good when he needs to win money so he can party and enjoy himself. Once he bags the money he'll spend it until he runs out of it. o:)

Concerning the comparison with the other guys I mentionned, we're not gonna start an argument which would be very subjective but my feeling is that Gulbis can hit as hard as he wants, but his big weapons don't seem to be as consistent as the other guys. Same or even worse for Raonic or Isner, since their movement is heavy and bh not reliable at all.

About the fact that he seems to be more annoyed against flatter hitters (-> flatter bounces), just check his results in 2013 so far : losses vs Mathieu, Przysiezny, Delpo, Berdych, Haas indoors or on grass, and vs Raonic, Haas (twice) and Hajek on clay.

Of course you will find results countering what i'm writing, but when he meets those flatter hitters, his lack of consistency is a problem since he doesn't have a plan B.

That's also a reason why he's so bad on grass and not good either indoors so far. And remember when he got his first big wins back in 08 or 09, those were matches on clay.

Now I ve been watching tennis long enough to say that I'm 100% sure that at least 20 players have the talent and the ability to make great shots (even on big points) to reach the big 4, but what they all lack is consistency. This is just the most important factor ever when considering if some player will or will not be in the top 4 one day.

Even a guy as little talented and "not-special" as Tipsarevic has reached top 8, imagine if the guy was talented :P

..so it largely based on your feeling. I see :) ...cause the results show the opposite.

I "get" what you are "feeling"....he does like the ball a bit higher and with a bit more time on it, but at the same time, his serves and returns on fast courts "get" better...you need to account for it. As far as grass, he Beat Berdman and Tsonga there...still the rather low bounce is a bit of a problem.

I am not arguing about talent here, or your other points....rather the statement that Gulbis has HARDER times against flat hitters as opposed to defenders.

Oh c'mon the Tsonga win doesn't even count to me
Just saying, I'd love to see him draw Ferrer first rounds of RG next season, could do some big damage there ^^
To me for sure he's gonna be a threat to big spiners almost every time on clay, and much less often to other very good players.

And btw Berdych, Ferrer, Murray out and Delpo one set down, that gotta feel good for Roger at least
