I hold no illusions that I could hang with a pro. The main difference is...there is no main difference, they do all the little things right; they do it consistently, they do it without thinking about it, they change directions mich faster/more efficiently, and they are much more physically fit, allowing them to keep it up. Serving is another big one...if you have never played somebody with a consistent kick serve that bounces at it above your head every time, it is going to STRAIGHT UP BAFFLE YOU until you figure out how to read/return it.

I have a pretty damn good forehand and backhand but all those little things listed above add up to kind of a big gulf in skill level

What type of court will you have? And all you can do is your best. If you always do that, you will always be satisfied in life

But then take off travel costs, coach fees etc. Very hard if you don't have backing from your national association. And after all that $75 thoudand is not a bad salary but when you can only play till max 35... Not good

I read a few years ago that almost everyone outside of the top 100 is struggling. As you said, they can make good earnings, but paying for travel, rooms, on-the-road food, coaching, equipment.... they barely come out with a profit.

WIthout a sponsor you will be facing a lot of expenses. And you will only get a sponsor if you end up being a mainstay in the top 40 or so. Catch 22. Unless you are someone like Gulbis who has been sponsored by his parents :D

Hell 2nd Bundesliga players get paid more than a Top 100 player because even if they don't play, they earn monthly wages and boni for winning. No travel costs either and distances are rather short.
