Well when he basically says that the audience would like to see some "war, blood, (...) broken racquets", he is just wrong. The audience wants to see tennis, and it's even more fascinating when you see two players staying calm and focused on the game, and only the game.

The popularity numbers of Tennis as a sport speak strongly otherwise. ;)

Personnally I'm not watching Gulbis with interest because he gets mouthy outside of the court, but because I know he can trouble the top guys from time to time.

Same here, the interviews are a welcomed bonus. I mostly like the drama, the up and downs. Makes for entertaining matches.

Mats Wilander, commentating on eurosport, was talking about that today and he said he agreed with Gulbis, though he says the fact that despite they are boring, that they are also nice, and this may have the effect of causing more people to want to play tennis.

He also said he'd agree to 16 seed Grand Slams, as opposed to 32. Which I agree with as well.

Murray agrees with Gulbis, so does Federer.

Federer:
Speaking to the Swiss press, he said: "I understand it, our interviews are not always the most exciting. But that's not just our fault, that's the machine. After each match, we have to give press conferences.

"But also you cannot say anything you do not like about something to someone without being totally criticised by many people. Therefore, everyone is very careful.

"On the other hand, I also think it's nice that we treat each other with respect."

I agree here with Federer. Mostly, you know the questions and you know how to answer. Sure, everyone can react on his own way and bring some "fire" in it, but i wouldn't blame those people like federer, because he is a "gentleman" kind of person. Also, "young blood" doesn't mean automatically, that they are different or have more temperament.

In the end, it's a subjective thing, which personality you like the most. Like it was said before, the most important thing is, that they play attractive tennis. In this case, we and the players have - to my mind - nothing to complain about the quality, besides that Nadal & Federer, for example, have totally different styles.

It's not the steak it's the sizzle...

It may not apply 100% to tennis, but it applies a great deal.

Gulbis shows it match in and match out. The forums online and the "buzz" every time he makes the comment pre-match make his matches and the atmosphere just exciting. The build-up is absolutely great if you ask me!

He is not suggesting that all ATP players should go nuts, he is saying that the top 4 are The Same. Same all boring "product" produced by corporation, and lack some major balls (in Murrays case of not wanting a scandal).

He also ties in the fact that the lower ranked players not getting payed enough and that the current "Top" guys are keeping quite about it. THIS is where one of them should have his personality and keep shedding light at this on EVERY press conference.

In my opinion gulbis clearly has some mental issues.. It's tennis not WWE wrestling.. You can't expect tennis players having battles off court in the press... That was ridiculous of him. A guy who hasn't achieved anything near to what top 4 have can't criticise them for something that they are not doing wrong. Top guys need to be gentle, polite.. They need to maintain a gentleman's attitude. They cant act like shit like gulbis does. one day he critcizes some guys in top 100 and one day he criticizes top 4.. This clearly shows how frustrated and mentally unstable he is.
