Tipsarevic: " Junior Boy will crush Serena Williams"

Talk about anything related to the ATP and WTA tours.

A construction worker with a 9-5 week works more than a 7-5 banker. Does that mean that the construction worker is entitled to a higher pay? Of course not because the outset couldn't be more different. It's not important how much you work but how much demand you create for yourself (you supplying your workforce). Correct me on this one, fans all over the world watch tennis to see the Big 3 in action, neutral followers won't like to see a final Tipsarevic-Simon at Wimbledon (low demand). And one couldn't care less about watching WTA tennis in order to see Tamira Paszek's boobs, Serena'S antics or listen to Sharapova's grunts because there seems to be a market for that too.

Is the demand (TV ratings) of ATP tennis higher than WTA tennis? Right now it definitely is but it wasn't always like this in the past, again long before equal pay existed in tennis. It's a man's world after all (blame it on sexual dimorphism in mammals). :)

And tennis is a sport where you don't get paid if you don't play (assuming that you don't own a big ass contract with a major label). If you want to earn more, you should strive to improve your game and be more successful. And every Top 20 player is a multi-millionaire anyway.

I've always been for a Best of Five final in grand slams for women's singles. Long before equal pay Navratilova was advocating it and I think the Williams sisters were too but it never materialized.

Of course a Best of Five match doesn't automatically translate into higher quality. A 3 set rout can be super boring. But when I think of all the thrilling fifth sets being played...the idea of going through 4-5 hours of tennis would ensure the survival of the fittest in a literal sense.

Yes I know best of Five finals happened at the WTA year's end championships but they are a joke compared to Slams and nowadays even the Men play Best of Three. So this is an odd situation, equal pay exists where it "shouldn't" because of work input but it doesn't exist anywhere else.

Comparing a construction worker and banker in this context is completely irrelevant. They do completely different jobs whereas male and female athletes of the same sport do the exact same thing. If you and a co worker both worked a tough construction job together would you be happy if he was coming to work putting in a so so effort for 4 hours as you worked your ass off for 8 only to make the same amount of money?

If you and a co worker both worked a tough construction job together would you be happy if both of you were coming to work putting in some effort for 4 hours yet the other guy would go home with more money (as it happens in every other tournament outside Slams and some Masters)?

The construction worker / banker example was put in to illustrate a different supply-demand scenario.

Here's another question, why do we care about very rich people trying to get even richer than other very rich people and none of this is ever going to have a substantial effect on us personally? Out of the whole population, very very few individuals will ever have the opportunity to compete in a Grand Slam and for a few years women have carved themselves a niche where they get equal pay by putting in less work. I say let them have it.

Rich people getting Richer? :? Tennis players by a large are NOT rich. Maybe we have a different definition of rich.

Prize money are paid for the tournament play. Endorsements paid for popularity.

Since the rules of the game are the same for both genders, but the play time and output is less by the woman players in Grand Slam, it is kinda obvious they should be paid less than man in these events.

They are getting paid more now, to make up for years of oppression they had to endure. This "equal prize" money agenda was pushed as a fight against woman oppression. The concept was for woman to have equality. But it turned out, the desired equality was only in reward, not input.

please explain how it is more dangerous for a female to play 5 sets than a man to play 5 sets??? If they arent willing to put in the off hours work on the track like the men to be in shape then why the hell should they get paid the same?!

Normally a female can't finish a point early and fast, because they dont have as much power as mens. And rallies usually became harder and longer. The fatigue on a WTA match is often higher than in a ATP match. Also because of the emotional differences between men and women.

In Basketball for example, females scores less points than boys. You can see it in olympics, mens capability is always higher. In tennis there is no limit on time. So 3 sets is ok.

Let them play 3 sets, but dont expect them to get the same pay.

Rich people getting Richer? Confused Tennis players by a large are NOT rich. Maybe we have a different definition of rich.

For a country like the US, I'd consider anyone with an annual income of over $500k to be rich. Or you can put a net woth of $1m as a base. Tipsarevic is far above these figures and definitely a very wealthy individual and so is Simon and anyone in the Top 20.

Speaking of fatigue, compare the times of males and females in a marathon race. The respectice world record is just 12 minutes apart and was only 10 minutes apart in 2003. In the 10 km swimming event in Beijing, the male gold medalist was only 8 minutes faster than the female winner. So while male athletes do have an obvious edge, it's really not THAT significant.

Best of Five would weed out the cream from the crop in terms of physical provess.

Didn't gather from this you were talking specifically about Tipsy. It seemed you were talking in general terms.

I could argue with you on the subject, as I think you underestimate tennis player's expenses ;) but in a different thread if you wish. I certainly would not consider a tennis player making $500k in prize money rich.

Maybe it's just my healthy pessimism but when people bring up points like this, first and foremost they're concerned about their own wellbeings. :)

I know that players outside the ATP circuit are struggling, they don't have contracts and big prize money earnings, they have to pay for everything, equipment, travels, hotels, etc. Or they are Gulbis whose family is already rich!

I read a while ago that Philippoussis filed for bankruptcy shortly after his career ended but this may be due to bad management or overspending.

That's what I thought too. :3

I'd just like to point out I'm all for equality between males and females. As long as it they are equal.

It's true there is a lot of bad quality matches, but it is always ike that on WTA. Mauresmo was a great player, but come on, he choke like every wta girl does. The same with Henin, Serena, or even Graff. I think WTA has evolved like ATP, but there is no enough personalities, that's why seems the quality is bad.

No need to pay more just because ATP is more famous, you need to protect WTA. I think actual system of payment is good. Tipsarevic men, you're reading Nietzche too much, "Will of Power" is brainwashing you.
you cant call a two-time grand slam champ, former world number one , olympic silver medal a choker. chokers dont win slam coria proved that
