So:
Pete's Man Up Score = 16714
Rafa's Man Up Score = 12047

Pete's 14 Slam wins and 762 career wins put him over the top (I'm assuming neither cried after a loss, at least publicly).

But Federer, with his 910 career wins, 17 Slams, 1 cry after a loss, and ZERO retirements = 24104

I have to say the formula needs work - that epic cry for Federer has to count for more. He's surely not twice the man that Rafa is.

I'm tired of checking stats, but I wonder about Agassi. I don't remember him crying or quitting.

Wasn't sure how to cube a SUPER vag move without wrecking everything else. Formula definitely needs work, but it's a good start.
How are you finding total retirement numbers?

On the ATP site, select a player, choose "Player Activity": http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Play ... .aspx?t=pa

Select a year and scroll down. The last match in each tournament will be a loss (unless they won the tournament), so just look for those with a "RET" next to it. It actually doesn't take that long to do.

In defense of your formula, Nadal did retire in a Grand Slam once: 2010 Aus Open, down 2 sets and 0-3, so he could have walked through 3 more games - that definitely takes away at least 10,000 man-up points.

IMO, Sampras is the MAN UP INDEX reference. There should be something in the formula to account for the number of Slams won after puking on court. And he is the only player to have a legitimate excuse for crying on court - crying because your coach is dying, while firing aces on your way to a win, is totally excusable.

The terms aren't mutually exclusive. Do you know anybody who would rather be called a gentleman than a man?

It was a joke, my dear friend. The connotations of the world 'gentle' made it feel like a joke worth making. :(

This is serious business. Our research will likely be scooped by the ATP website by the end of the week.

Crying, puking, or leaving any other bodily fluids on the court DURING a match are purposefully left out of the formula. Only tears of shame and self pity count against a player.
Maybe Fed is the ultimate player after all, that 0 retirement stat is a really big deal for such a long career.

Make a distinction between "would've lost anyway" and "I was ****ing winning"

Also what about walkovers?

Any player who takes a piss on the court is THE MAN. "Bathroom break? Hold on....nah, I'm good."

Tennis is a largely mental game, and I think taking a piss on the court sends a strong positive message of confidence and dominance.

'My side of the court. MINE.'

:) Djokovic should have done that against Nadal in 1/2 of RG. Instead of asking for watering the court...

The 'crying incident' aside, I think Fed's 0 retirements has to count for a LOT.

He's such a smooth graceful player that his mental toughness gets underrated. He plays with a lot of risk and he's been able to pull it off in some insanely pressure-filled moments.

The first thing that comes to mind is that inside out forehand winner against Haas at RG a few years back that got him back in the match. Though there have been countless other moments

I'm a huge Federer fan, but it's just hard to look past the crying incident. I mean, it wasn't just crying, it was uncontrollable sobbing..... in front of Laver...... in Australia, the land that brought us Crocodile Dundee....

He was even blaming the crowd for killing him.
