If Stan plays like he has/did against Novak it's going to be a long match.

That's true, but just now i read that Stan haven't been ever able to win Rafa a single set. The statistics in their matches are: 12-0 and 26-0 sets for Nadal.

It's hard to believe that Stan could win this match, but everything is possible, and statisics are just that, statistics.

I think even Xavi hopes a little bit that Stan wins. :P Say 90% Rafa 10% Stan?

I watched most matches of Stan/Rafa, and to me Stan did not play a single good set against him. Sure, most of it is because of Rafa, but there is a bit part of Stan there as well. If Stan can replicate the form and more importantly the belief he has against Djoker - we will have a long match and Stan CAN win....but him playing his best still does not make it 50/50.

He needs to hurt him and hurt him early, serve well and come to net. No way he can battle him from the baseline, Rafa is more patient then Djoker and his balls bounce higher - pushing Stan behind the baseline....he cannot win from there.
Level 13 Edberg and counting...

Something's changed with Stan, if you're capable of beating Novak 9-7 in the 5th you're on the good path. In my opinion 70% Rafa 30% Stan, but if Rafa's BH works like today vs Fed then Stan has NO CHANCE

Off-topic: Sampras vs Rafa? what do you think? Sampras never had to face a guy like Rafa

Stan serves better, his backhand is better. Actually both Dimitrov and Stan served better than Fed. Wouldn't hurt to analyze Nadal's QF. Also if you know that you can beat Nole at the AO, you can beat anyone else. Remember Nole was leading their H2H by 15-2 and the last loss (in 2006) was a retirement at 6-6.

This tournament is great so far, I bet no one expected that Women's final too but Li Na's first title there is long overdue.

Sampras holds a crazy record, that is finishing the year at No. 1 for six straight years. Also 285 weeks at the top. Of course his curse were clay courts.

Good question. I'd say old grass Pete all day, any type clay rafa all day, new grass Pete 75/25, hard courts 50-50.

The thing rafa is head and shoulders of everybody else in history is wearing his opponent down over time. Pete never allowed this and wouldn't allow rafa to do it to him. Pete would just swing out on rafa's serve games and if he got a 0-15 or 0-30 then he would suddenly be willing to rally and work the point.

If Stan can get late in the 5th and starts to lose his legs he should take a page out of Pete's book and put all his energy in his own serve unless he can get ahead on one of rafa's service games, then turn on STAN THE MAN mode.

I just remembered that return game rafa produced against Isner in the 5th set at the French. Isner was serving well that day and rafa's safe returns weren't working. That game he broke isner was ridiculous, he came up with 4 spectacular returns against the isner serve out of nowhere. If he could reproduce this against Pete, edge rafa.

Checking Sampras' career statistics.

He's 14-4 in Slam finals and 5-1 in YEC finals. Also 11-8 in Masters finals (never won on Clay). 64-24 titles overall.

Only player with a positive H2H from 10 or more matches against him is Krajicek.

But then he is retired and Nadal still may have a few good years. At this point Sampras still has an edge.

It's easy to be Mr. Nice Guy when you're kicking everyone's ass - not so easy when you're getting your ass kicked.

If I were his adviser I'd be telling him to protect his legacy - get the hell out of Dodge. Retire.

I'm assuming he said that in the heat of battle. This is probably his worst and stupid one we know about.
Last year he yelled at Andy(forgot what he said) because he stopped playing for a second cause he thought a ball was out and it threw off Roger. Roger should have learned by now keep stupid stuff like this in your head where it belongs.

I read that he complained about the time Nadal took between points.
They played 33 times and Nadal has only received 2 time warnings, far too less according to Federer.
He also claimed that the chair umpires only dare to handout warnings/point penalties on ground courts - and not on center courts.

MELBOURNE: Roger Federer railed against Rafael Nadal's loud grunting and slow play on Friday after he tumbled out of the Australian Open at the hands of the aggressive Spaniard.

The usually ice-cool Swiss had sharp words with the umpire mid-match about the Spaniard's ball-striking grunt, and complained he repeatedly goes unpunished for time violations.

Federer's polished demeanour slipped after he crashed to a seventh consecutive Grand Slam defeat to his rival and in straight sets, in an anti-climactic semifinal in Melbourne.

Federer admitted he found Nadal's grunt distracting because the Spaniard was making a noise during some points, but not others. Nadal won 7-6 (7/4), 6-3, 6-3 for his 23rd win over Federer.

"It goes in phases. One point he does and he doesn't. That's just what I was complaining about," Federer said. "Had no impact on the outcome of the match."

He added that fidgety Nadal, who is notoriously slow to serve, should have racked up several time violations during their 33-match rivalry -- but instead, he has only received two.

"Rafa is doing a much better job today than he used to. I mean, I'm not complaining much about the time. But I think I've played him, what, 33 or 34 times," Federer said.

"He's gotten two point penalties over the course of our rivalry. I just think that's not quite happening. I mean, we know how much time he used to take.

"I'm not complaining about so many things. But, I mean, either you have rules or you don't. If you don't have rules, it's fine. Everybody can do whatever they want to do."

He added: "I didn't lose the match because of that. It didn't bother me. I just felt I had to mention something."

Nadal looked surprised when told about Federer's exchange with the umpire, and said nobody had complained about his grunting before.

"I really didn't know that. When I am playing, when I am hitting the ball during the point, the last thing that I am thinking is trying to bother the opponent," he said.

"The only thing that I am focusing on is trying to hit my ball well. That's it.

"I am sorry if I bothered somebody, but I never did in the past. So is something that nobody in my career, you know, told me nothing about this, that I am bothering the opponent.

"But if I bothered him in any moment, he knows 100 percent it was not because I wanted to. I never do anything on the court to bother the opponent. I think I did the normal things that I do in every match."

Although I do agree that nadal have some really annoying traits but this was not the time for federer to complain.
I don't know if nadal grunts on purpose or not but after all these years federer should have gotten used to them.

P.s I ve heard mirka had some sort of argument as well with somebody from the crowd after hearing some offensive words about federer

while ill see where you get upset at roger for that xavi, i feel like at the time it was in more response to the lesson nadal was giving him on the court that day  i still don't think he should retire. the guy obviously still loves to play, and lets face it, if nadal is not in the tournament then fed has a shot of winning it
