Australian Open: Federer or Gonzo?

Postby Cro Morgan » Fri, 26 Jan 2007 16:57

If Gonzalez plays like he did against Haas - hell, like he has the entire fortnight - I'm thinking he has a shot at toppling Federer. What do you think?

Proof that Gonzo could (will) win ....

Their past matches ...

2006 Basel Switzerland, Federer wins 6-3 6-2 7-6(3)
2006 ATP Masters Series Madrid, Federer wins 7-5 6-1 6-0
2006 ATP Masters Series Canada,Federer wins 6-1 5-7 6-3
2006 ATP Masters Series Monte Carlo, ederer wins 6-2 6-4
2005 Wimbledon England Grass Q Federer wins 7-5 6-2 7-6(2)
2005 Roland Garros. Federer wins 7-6(11) 7-5 6-2
2005 ATP Masters Series Monte Carlo, Federer wins 6-2 6-7(3) 6-4
2004 Hamburg AMS, Federer wins 7-5 6-1
2004 Indian Wells AMS, ederer wins 6-3 6-2

Lots of tight sets ... when Gonzalez wasn't playing nearly as well as is he playing now. An improved Gonzalez could (will) turn all the close losses into wins ... GONZO IN FOUR!

But you can forget all matches which have been played in 2005 or 2004. Both players improved too much.
But I think Federer will win clear. 6-2 6-1 6-3, that is my opinion.
When it's a grand slam Federer is still even better.
I already see him crying as last year

Well his performance against Haas was indeed top notch. But it will of course be harder for Gonzalez to play that well against Roger. Not only because it is Roger but it is also the biggest game of his life, his first grand slam final and against a guy he has never beaten. The kind of game gonzalez plays requires full confidence and no doubts and I think he will not stay doubt free even if he gets into a lead on Sunday.
So I think Fed will win this one but if Gonzalez keeps this level of play up he might get another crack later on who knows.

Federer definitely has the mental edge - the guy never chokes (well, not counting the Rome Masters).

I think Gonzalez has the game to beat Fed, hopefully his noggin won't let him down.

If federer keeps his level like when he beated roddick, gonzalez will have NO CHANCE to win.

Federer in 3 straight sets, takes the win, and championship

Federer will do what he wants, with one or two tie break, but victory for sure. 8)

Gonzalez has one of the biggest wills to win, he proved that in Sydney in 2004, as did Massu. They proved in again in their very close Davis Cup loss to USA last year.

Gonzalez will topple Goliath in 5...

As a Gonzo fan, this is the score that makes me nervous ...

2006 ATP Masters Series Madrid, Federer wins 7-5 6-1 6-0

I watched that match. Gonzo was as good or better than Fed in the opening set. Coulda won, shoulda won, woulda won ... didn't ... then he folded like a lawn chair.

If it's going good, Gonzo is good ... a little bit of adversity and *poof* ... bye, bye "A" game.

Not the stuff of champions. Hopefully he'll be better on Sunday.
