Sony Open - Shame on you!

Postby djarvik » Mon, 18 Mar 2013 16:53

Men's Main Draw Wildcards:
David Nalbandian
Lleyton Hewitt
James Blake
Christian Harrison

Shame on the organization for not giving a wild card to Gulbis. He pulled out from the event driven by this decision and not wanting to go through qualifying again. Will get ready for Clay season.

Nalby and Hewitt I understand, they are household names and playing rather good this season. But James Blake? 2-3 this season and a loss to Gulbis 1-6 4-6. Or Harrison? ...a youngster who did not play a tour match this year and JUST lost to....you guessed it - Gulbis in qualifying of Indian Wells.

One of the two players who took Rafa, the winner, to 3 sets in Indian Wells and the only one who actually had a chance to win him, being 2 points away from a win. A player who wins 13 matches in 16 days and arguable is one of the hottest players on the tour at the moment - doesn't get the Wild Card and is made to play qualifying once again.

F... you Sony!

The Sony Open still had one main-draw wild card remaining for the men, but Gulbis doubted it would go to him.
“I can ask,” Gulbis said in Indian Wells, “but I don’t think somebody’s going to give a Latvian guy a wild card. Let’s be honest. Doesn’t matter how good he plays.”

I don’t think somebody’s going to give a Latvian guy a wild card.

Bummer, but he called it correctly. Need to be a former top 10 player or from US to get a wildcard.

It's a US tournament, so locals are prioritized.

So Nadal, Federer and Gulbis are missing, gonna be a dull tournament.

And *** that wildcard whore Hewitt.

Gulbis has every right to be angry, but his not playing Miami is a sign that he still has a lot of growing up to do.

Gulbis should have played, won the thing, and then told the event organizers to "**** off" during his victory speech.

Word.

Although Miami....you know...lots of places to lose yourself. ...so maybe this is a better decision, to go to clay courts and get ready for that season, away from temptations.

I'd have rather seen Gulbis, but I can't blame the tournament for the decision. They have to do what they feel is best for the tournament, regardless if it's what the more hardcore tennis fans would want.

And Gulbis has no one but himself to blame - the guy shouldn't be ranked so low that he needs a wildcard.

I'm going to assume DelPo was really tired and couldn't be assed. :P

I was really hoping Berdych would go out as well, he was down a set and in a tiebreak before Gimeno Traver folded.

You see Djarvik, it wasn't as stupid as you first thought to bring Haas in the Tennis Elbow roster :D
