French Open could move away from Roland Garros in Paris

The French Open could be forced into a "heartbreaking" move away from Paris in the next few years due to problems with the infrastructure at Roland Garros.

Organisers have long considered ways of extending the current stadia but these have stalled because of opposition from the public and environmentalists.

And tournament director Gilbert Ysern explained: "We have two options, make it bigger or move out.

"It would be heartbreaking to leave Paris but we have to consider it."

A final decision on whether the tournament will remain in Paris is expected during a general assembly of the French Tennis Federation scheduled for next February.

"Over the last 10 years, the three other grand slam tournaments have progressed, notably in terms of infrastructure, but we haven't," Ysern added, referring to the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open.

"Roland Garros cannot stay the way it is."

The French Open attracts 450,000 spectators during the fortnight it takes place, but Ysern revealed that world number one Roger Federer had given him a "long list of complaints" about the Paris tournament.

This year's French Open runs from 24 May to 6 June.

I've read that the new sites being looked at are:

- Marne-la-Vallee to the east of Paris near Disneyland
- Versailles, near the grounds of the chateau, to the west
- Evry-Bondoufle, in the south, on a disused racecourse
- Gonesse, in the north.

I can just picture the traditionalists getting all upset and hot under the collar over this.

I think it'd be a really big shame if it had to move away from Roland Garros, but it definitely wouldn't be the end of the world...wouldn't really matter at all to me, a fan who in all likelihood may never visit Roland Garros anyways. It all looks the same on TV

It's terrible !

The new sites they choosed except maybe versailles are stinky and rotten. It became a political issue now.
I leave at a few blocks away from Roland Garros, therefore i know a bit what's happening.
They need to grow and make a covered court with a roof; the poeple in the neighbourhood of the Roland Garros stadium don't want the inconveniences of the renovations even though it's very possible. It's a shame. More over it would cost 200 Mil € to renovate and 600 to make the entire site.
it won't change anything on TV but for the players and the spectactors, trust when I say it will change everything.

I suppose at the end of the day it is a business. I know football grounds have this a lot when they look to move from a long standing area, but if the area cannot accomodate new facilities it has to move.

Saying that I cannot imagine Wimbledon moving.

No wimbledon will never move now. It seems to be the only constant in a ever changing world of tennis. In 100 years time, Centre Court will still be tennis's cathedral.

I bet both Roland Garros and Wimbledon will eventually move to Rochelle, NJ.

Seriously thou, I hope none of them move.

I plan a big tour for myself for 2011. I want to go and visit every Grand Slam! ...in the same year. Something I wanted to do for a long time and it looks like 2011 is the year.

The French can't move from Rollang Garros, the French IS Rolland Garros ;) The French is to move from "La Porte d'Auteuil" in Paris...
I hope they'll just cover the actual stadium...It's perfect where it is now, where it has always been!
But the US Open moved, and the Aussie Open too...So i guess they won't hesitate long...The final decision is to be taken in Feb 2011...

If the tournament is called the French Open and the courts are known as Roland Garros, if/when the tournament moves away from that stadium, it won't be at Roland Garros anymore. Sounds pretty simple to me.

Yeah it's true that Rolland Garros is the stadium name...
But also the name of the french slam since the beginning...
So i'm guessing that if the French has to move it will keep the Rolland Garros name...They will build a new stadium if it moves, and i'm pretty sure they'll name it Rolland Garros just to keep the original name for the french slam...Also known out of France as "The French"...
I know it's a lot of guessing! 8)
