Sampras and Federer

Postby mecir72 » Mon, 26 Nov 2007 21:24

Ok so we have discussed the sampras and federer matches here and some think that Pete still has it in him to beat the best. I am not one of them. Not in singles atleast, in doubles however I think he would be very good. So I ask who here thinks that Pete and Roger could go all the way at wimbledon doubles? I think they would be hard to beat and if Roger has an aura today when he steps on court imagine the aura this team would bring!

i don't think they can win wimbledon, because of the fact that sampras is retired.

I don't think so, but I'd love to see them try.

I think it is definitely possible, so I think they could win. I don't think they will, however. Even if they tried, the top doubles teams are not a walk in the park just because most of them don't play singles.

And Federer doesn't play bad either on doubles, his main problem is always that guy Allegro. A guy whose name it's the same as a movement of a Sonata by Beethoven or Mozart, clearly doesn't put any respect lol. By the way, retired is just a word. It means that probably the guy will not play more, but doesn't mean he won't play. The fact he says he is retired, I mean, he is not forbidden to play on that tour since the moment he says that hehe. So he can always return.

I think federer/allegro played the bryans recently (maybe in basel) and it came down to a match tiebreak. Federer is a great doubles player, probably the best in the world so I think they would be a great team. Seem to get along well too.

I don't think Federer is close to being the best doubles player in the world. Maybe if he played doubles a lot he could be, but where he is right now I don't think that can be said.

mecir is right in my eyes, federer is probably the best doubleplayer in the world.

reasons:
-best reactions
-best volleygame
-fantastic service (he can do an incredible spin)
-probably the best return
-his short and deap slice would be toxic for many double teams
-his anticipation, and especially his natural instinct to play the right ball in the right situation
-and last but not least his coolness

no bryan brother is able to keep up with this.

i would be really really happy, if we could watch them both together on court in wimbledon next year. coz the question always was, how would be the result between sampras and federer today. now we could watch two legends side by side fighting for the wimbledon crown.

I don't think a single person can be labeled the "best doubles player in the world." After all, it's a team sport. One great player does not necessarily make a great team.

I hate to burst your bubble guys but Sampras wouldn't play doubles with anyone.

He gave up playing in 1992 I think as he thought it was lame.

In theory, however, yes Sampras and Fed would demolish the Bryan brothers simply because the sampras serve and fed volley combination would be too much for them to handle.

A doubles team is more than the sum of it's parts...in theory, Fed and Sampras would be unstoppable, but who knows? There's a reason the Bryans (both unspectacular singles players) are on top of the doubles world: they work really well together and they seem to always know what the other person is going to do. Maybe Pete and Roger could do that, but I doubt it.
