Gasquet back in Top 8 soon ?

Postby Florian » Sun, 10 Feb 2013 15:33

Well Richard is doing quite a stunning start of the season with two 250 titles and a R16 at the AO, sure he still hasn't beat a top 10 yet but he's showing some nice consistency in his results and gameplay so far in 2013.

So do you think he'll be able to reach the top 8 again, which would definitely help him get a nicer draw to reach QFs more easily (he was ranked 7 in 2007, the year he defeated Roddick at Wim, that famous QF) or has he just been taking profit from Davydenko's physical breakdown in Doha F and Berdych's withdrawal from Montpellier ?

I don't know, but surely I hope he will come back in top 8.
But he should start winning some big match again.

Gasquet isn't at top fitness shape compared to the top guys so I don't see him in the top 8 anytime soon.

Well he's totally able to reach top 8 again, there's no doubt about it. His game is really incredible, I think the only think which makes that he's not anymore in it is his lack of consistency. And as you said, he's currently showing some nice consistency.
He hasn't beaten any top 10, but I can't remember the last time Tsonga did and he's top 8. So there's no reason Richard can't !

It's difficult to get excited about guys like Gasquet because you know they'll never be good enough to challenge the best - no matter how much they train (or abstain from drugs).

It's the Grand Slams and Masters tournaments which really count.

Last season he beat Murray in Rome, then Berdych Fish and Isner in Montreal, not that bad. The year before also in Rome he defeats Fed and Berdych...and clay is pretty much a surface where your physical abilities count
