Isner BEATS Novak

Talk about anything related to the ATP and WTA tours.

He isn't even close to Ivanisevic. Players will be mainly remembered for their grand slam performances.

The reason why he is better than Karlovic is because he put one point into DBL.

I think you guys are underselling Isner a bit -- I'm guessing he's the only player outside of the top 4 who has beaten both Federer and Djokovic in the past year.....guess there might be one or two other guys, but it seems unlikely.

The guy hasn't even peaked yet. I say let's come back to this conversation this time next year and he will be top 5 for sure.

It will be entertaining watching Isner play during the clay court season.Maybe your expectations will diminish then.

He just beat Federer on clay, in 5 sets. Because of the trajectory, his serve works fine on clay, since clay is slower, it also gives him more time to setup for that forehand. That forehand is really what sets him apart from just being a Server.

That was an indoor clay court though.Very different conditions from the european outdoors.Clay is more about footwork than serve and that's why I think Isner's weaknesses could be exposed there.

He also took Nadal to 5 sets at RG last year.

I still think Isner is a one-trick pony. Granted his forehand has lethal tendencies, but its not lethal. I've never seen so many half-ass groundstrokes in an ATP Masters final.

I'm throwing Isner into the same boat as Baghdatis (2006 AO final), Tsonga (2008 AO final) and Verdasco (2009 AO SF). That is, good players who can beat great players when everything is working. Of course, "everything working" isn't all that common amongst the second and third tier of players.

Ahhh but one big difference here Paul - the serve. All the guys you mentioned do not have this as their weapon. Isner got a serve to match Karlovic. Both get tons of tie breaks and generally make every top player uncomfortable. But Isner is a better mover, has a FH as another some-what-reliable weapon.

I think he will be a top 10 for some time now... He is also a very good Clutch server, he manages his serving much better then Karlovic or even Roddick.

I think he has a better serve - more variety. His kick serve into the ad court is all but un-returnable when he hits it well. And he moves better than any guy his size that I've ever seen.
