Federer explains absence from Davis Cup

Postby Cro Morgan » Thu, 16 Sep 2010 14:28

Roger Federer, whose name was missing from the Swiss Davis Cup lineup announced last week, says he is skipping the upcoming tie against Kazakhstan in order to rest for the fall season.

"I need some extra time to relax after the intense weeks in North America so I can finish the year strong," said a statement from Federer on his official site.

Let me translate for you (i.e. what Federer was really saying)...

"The Davis Cup is a farce. It's a piece of shit, insignificant tournament that the ITF tries to play off as some sort of mini-Olympics. It's ain't that - and never will be until the governing body remove their heads from their collective asses and make the Davis Cup a once-every-two-year event - at the very least. Once every three years would be even better."

i understand this day and time that davis cup is not important to many people.....but whatever happened to pride? pride for your country for davis cup? and whatever happened to the pride in winning doubles? people have changed just as the times have changed and have become selfish and focus on nothing but singles for their own satisfaction

There is still plenty of "pride for your country" in sports. Tons of it actually (World Cup, Ryder Cup, Olympics, etc. etc) but the ITF just doesn't get it - or maybe they do get it, yet their priorities are misaligned.

The Davis Cup could be huge in promoting/marketing tennis if the ITF made it more extraordinary; more significant. For starters, host the tournament once every two years, or three years.

Hardly anyone cares about the Davis Cup - and that includes a large number of tennis players and tennis fans. Conversely, even people who dislike gymnastics, for example, will watch gymnastics during the Olympics - because they're rooting for their country, in a sense.

Presently, the Davis Cup a joke - and an absolute embarrassment to tennis when compared to the International events of other sports.

On a related note:

"Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from Serbia’s opening singles match in the Davis Cup semifinal against the Czech Republic, citing a case of gastroenteritis.

A statement on the Davis Cup website says Djokovic has been replaced by 47th-ranked Victor Troicki, who will play Radek Stepanek on Friday."

If you're not familiar with the term "gastroenteritis," the definition:

gas·tro·en·ter·i·tis –noun
Possessing no desire to further tire oneself, or risk injury, by playing in a crap, means-nothing tennis tournament.

Even if that's true, it doesn't detract from the fact that the Davis Cup is a crap, means-nothing tennis tournament.
