play 5th set out or play tiebreak at 6-6?

Postby Bowler2151 » Wed, 26 May 2010 00:40

Today I heard some of the American Commentators at the French Open talking about in the 5th set they should play a tie break in the 5th set like the they do in the U.S Open.

I like that the 5th set gets played out and I think the U.S Open should go back to playing the 5th set out. What does everyone else think of this? It would not suprise me if the 5th set in all of the slams would eventually go to tiebreaks.

I think the Roddick-Federer Wimbledon final last year was a great example to not change the 5th set to a tiebreak

I feel like, traditionally, the Americans are big servers and thus do better in tiebreaks. They can say all they want about "making the schedule go quicker", but I'm pretty sure it's just to help the American players who aren't as fit and have bigger serves.

I actually ran a tournament of my own last year where the matches were best of 3 and the third set was played out without a tiebreaker 8)

It never came down to that though :(

As much as I love the tie break, sometimes my friends and I even play tie break matches instead of regular sets, I don't want a final set to be ended with a tie break. Not even in 3-set matches. It's like when a fotboll (soccer) match ends with penalty shots. It becomes more a game af chance...like a lottery. :?

I am all for playing it out in the Final, but not in earlier rounds. This potentially can make a final look "tired" or QF or a SF. I want each match to be a exciting to watch. But when a title is on the line - let them play it out.

I love the slams for the reason that the 5th set is played out, we only get to see it 3 times a year. I think they should keep it that way

i wouldnt change any of them personally. i like watching sets being played out in tours like the australian open and wimbledon; but i love the final-set tiebreaks at the US. Theyre really exciting to watch; like last year there was roddick v isner, istomin v lapentti, dent v navarro, wozniacki v kuznetsova, kvitova v safina, shvedova v jankovic (this one was amazing!), and ivanovic v bondarenko (thats all i can remember).

The crowds are different in all these different slams, and i think the 5th set rule kinda suits the crowd in different tournaments.

Play it out for sure, when I think of all the amazing matches that would have been cut short I'd hate to see them do away with it.

Also there is so much riding on these matches, to potentially have one bad call or net cord in a breaker decide it would leave a bad taste.

I say leave the Slams as they are, but the US Open is probably always going to be a tiebreak 5th set, because of pressure from the TV network (they don't want a tennis match impeding onto one of their precious reality-show cash-cows)

there is no final set tiebreak in the qualifying too is there? so a qualifying game could go 6-4, 2-6, 12-10? or is that just me thinking that.

Yeah, that is correct. Jesse Witten had a 3rd set in qualifying that was a 19-17 set
