6-2 7-6 win vs becker.

He hadn't many unforced errors and played a decent match.
This is hopeful for Federer

Maybe he also feels more comfortable with the faster conditions playing at altitude in Madrid.

That is probably true. Hopefully he can make a nice run, but i can foresee a rematch with gulbis, and i bet that gulbis is going to like the faster pace as well?

Definately Gulbis will appreciate the extra pace as well.
I think as Djarvik might have previously pointed out, Gulbis is a bad match-up for Fed on any surface because besides hitting a heavy ball(probably the hardest hitter on tour?) he almost always plays extremely aggresively, and so this takes Fed out of his comfort zone because it's usually Federer who likes to dictate play and end points early.

I don't see what the big fuss is, anyone who knows anything about tennis knows Federer doesn't have the motivation to play well outside the slams.

He may try to win but I feel it's more because he hates losing than he enjoys winning. But it is difficult to play you'r best when you barely have any motivation. I still feel he will make it far in Roland Garros, we've all seen how his form suddenly gets better in slams and I'm sure this one will be no different. And if Federer plays his best he will be unbeatable, not even Gulbis at his best has a chance against him

Never thought I'd see the day that Roger Federer beating Benjamin Becker would be newsworthy :(

The man known for eternity ONLY as the "player who beat Agassi in his last match" (of course you don't know Agassi had 36 years old and had win a 5 set match in the round before vs Baghdatis  ).
