Drop shots

Postby Dakra » Sun, 02 Dec 2012 00:16

I discussed today with djarvik. We talked about dropshots. How much this is / is not unfair. How much for the set is good? How bad?

Djarvik think I played the game too dropshots.

My opinion:
Dropshots is a strategic blow against someone good.

Against some players just do not play dropshots because they can handle it expires and give point. Most players DROPSHOT return! Therefore dropshost sometimes good, sometimes bad.

Djarvik has a specific style of play. He is many meters behind the baseline and DROPSHOT often can not run down. Must run away. And he has a slow response. The baseline but is solid.

I know that when I will get dropshots point. Almost always! How often can I use it and get the item for free?

I think that in this case the error is even opponents. Opponent should adapt to play closer to the baseline and then eliminate this weapon. Opponent but failed to adapt.

The game then was very special. I played constantly accelerating and normal shots, but I knew that because of slow reaction djarvik, I always give dropshots and get a point.

-----------
I'm still wondering: Can I give dropshots and get a point, or not yet?
It soon? It is too late? Should I hide the blow to important moments (breakpoinst). When I play dropshost during important moments, then it's not abuse? Use dropshost is often unnecessary because it would then be unfair to use dropshots at breakpoints? (Dropshost = point for me.)

According to me this is also error opponent. He reacts if time can defend.

I think it is not so hard to return when ready dropshots tactics.

Many players dropshost always runs out, because they react.

I can also say: I can not respond to top spin. You do not play topspin. :) (Absurd example)

----------------------
Dropshost How much is a lot? 1 per gem? 5 per set? 7 for the set?

I lost the match. Because I wanted to play too dropshots. I was afraid that it would be unfair. I do not want to play fair. Although I think I've played much in the 1st set (which I won thanks dropshots).

I played dropshost = 8-10 in first set (+ -1 in game). In the other sets I played less. Number dropshots fact was crucial to who wins. I did not know what it is.

I ask the advice of more experienced players. As with dropshost be fair?

I really would love to hear on this subject from the more experienced players.

Dakra did a good job explaining it ;) You should do it more often man, this will practice your English, it is not as bad as you think!

Basically, the impression that I got, is that Darka was playing drop shots too often. As he explained, early on at 3-4 he was around 8 drop shot winners (a few missed). At this rate he would have ended up with roughly 45 drop shots for the close 3 set the match. It seemed to me excessive.

But maybe like Dakra says, if they are working - why not do them?

It can also be the case where the Drop Shot stats are a bit "too good". Dakra is right, I am kinda bad at getting to them  but at the same time, his success rate of hitting them was fantastic. He missed very few, maybe 1 out of 10 on average.

In any case, we both appreciate if some of the Better players can comment on this. Thanks guys.

Not a "better" player here but ill give my 2c anyways. I am kinda bad with returning drop shots as well. Even when on the baseline i only get to a small number of them. But that is on me. If my opponent notices that and plays it every point i would have to say i could not complain about it. I would be annoyed but should be annoyed with myself and not the opponent. It would be the same if he had a great service every time. Id have to work on my return.

That being said, i do believe the success rate of the drop shot is off the charts for better players. It looks like that with some practice you can get success rates (for both execution of the drop and the number of shots from your opponent that it can be played on) that Federer would not even dream of except if he was super high.

For now i would say it is more then fine to do a lot of them if your opponent is far behind the baseline. Just as it would be fine to lob frequently if your opponent comes to the net each point. But when your opponent is playing mostly at the baseline and you notice he is not that good at returning drops i think its a bit of a dickish move to play them more then once a game. Just because the success rate is so high.

Drop shots are too easy to execute and probably too effective. With that on mind, if the opponent uses a heavy hitter with big groundstrokes which force you back, it is too easy to do it and get an easy point.Especially on balloons (floating balls when no button has been hit) one can always hit a 100% perfect drop shot just getting over the net.

On the other hand, what is pretty hard to do is disguise the drop shot-which is how the drop shot is always played in real tennis. No one just drop shots looking like he's preparing for it.It would be great in my opinion that in order to hit a drop, you'd have to prepare for a normal shot and then at contact change your shot.

However, from my experience, drop shot spammers will eventually get predictable and lose. They are usually players not confident enough for their game who seek a cheap, easy and relatively riskless way to end the point by using the drop shot. Most of the great players I've played will never use more than 3-4 drop shots in a best of 3 match and that's because it isn't really needed in the end.
