All the talking is history now, the match is finished: VMoe86 (Ferrer) defeats eliomelma (del Potro) 6-4, 6-2.
Elio started serving and so I was a little bit nervous at the beginning: Always having to serve to stay in the set, because it would be difficult to break him serving well. And he served well in the first set. I rarely go far behind the baseline on return, but in the first few games I did and it didn't help. Sure, I got the ball in play but he could hit return for a winner or control the point. Fortunately I served well with Ferrer, too, and did not face a break point in the first set.
At 4-4 in the first set I decided to return closer to the baseline and first point in this service game I won, 0-15. He then went to 30-15, but I had a good chance to make it 30-30 -- I was not positioned well enough and he won the point. I stayed tough in this game, got a good return in and controlled the point, which I then finished at the net after moving him around with some nice angles. On 40-30, second serve, return winner. Next point I was a bit lucky: Return was not really good, but I anticipated where his shot would go and so I won the point. Also on the break point it was a good point for me. Finally the break, phew. I served it out without problems.
Second set I immediately got a triple break point and one of them he made an error, so I got the early break. His and my first serve percentage dropped a bit in the second set and he immediately got a chance to break back. I did not put in a first serve on the break point, so I was aware that point could be over quickly with a return winner. He returned close to the center of the baseline and we had rally, in which I hit a safe shot: Here I just guessed the correct side, was lucky and won the point.
I held and then had double break point to go up 3-0. It reminded me of my match against Fox yesterday... On both break points I made errors because I wanted a bit too much on these shots. Elio held and kept on fighting: Another break point on my serve at 2-1, another second serve. Again, close to the center of the baseline, I responded cross court with the forehand and forced an error, phew. Both of us held for 3-2. Again he had a break point, on a second serve. He went full out cross court with his backhand, I think his return was on the line, very close to it, but I was there, responded with a cross court backhand winner on the line!
From here on it was easier for me and with another break I kind of secured the win. Serving out wasn't too difficult here.
Good match Elio, interesting match-up! Now Elias is waiting in my first final, looking forward to it.
