Dynamic stats concept

Postby djarvik » Fri, 04 Jul 2014 16:45

I have been toying with it in my head for some years and want to get your thoughts guys.

Basically, the obstruct is that all players stats start at 75/100. You can pick the animations, one handed or two handed BH, height weight etc. As you play, the game, or rather some engine inside the game, keeps a track of your shots, tendencies, reaction times etc.. and adjusts your stats, slowly, to form your style of play.

A rough example would be you starting with 75 FH and BH, but you constantly run around your BH to hit Forehands, in this case, over a period of time, the balance will shit into 78FH 72BH, or even further into 82FH 69BH and so on...

It cam be broken down even further, for example, if you not hitting close to the lines, your precision would move from 75 to 72 and in order to raise it, you will need to aim closer to the lines, but if you do that and generate many faults then your consistency moves down to 72.....or you will be safer and lose the precision in favor of consistency by hitting with more margin.....

This can be applied to any stat and rules could be created to avoid overpowering one stat or the other.

Using such "engine" will be tons of fun as the player will be slightly adjusting over time to morph into your individual style of play and it will also give ability for player to "work" on certain things to improve.

What do you think guys?

That sounds great and would create some great matches with style and intelligence although I find it hard to imagine hitting closer to the lines with practice with a control pad lol, all be it sounds like a great idea

Djarvik,

Good stuff really. But do you remember over a year ago we talked about this?? I had this idea, you said it was stupid. Anyway, your idea here is the same idea but better thought out. Refined. I simply had the idea of a dynamic stat evolution. But you have described it in some detail here and I think its a great idea.

Sounds like complex coding though yes?

I am not a coder/programmer - so I can only speculate on this, Manutoo can answer better.

BTW - such engine can be also employed in different/additional way. Instead of affecting the player from match to match, it can also be programmed to affect the player during the match, based on stats/play. If you miss a few forehands - your consistency or precision goes down slightly causing you to play slightly safer to regain "confidence" or "rhythm". Same with serve, hitting a few good serves should raise your stats slightly allowing you to "experiment" and go for more, while missing a few serves should make you keep it simple for a few points. Right now is a bit random.

The counter argument to all this is that most of the "dynamics" are provided by the user now, not the player. Which is quite correct. But at the same time we do have stats for our players, so already the "user" heavily depends on a player - and that takes out dynamics a bit. It molds the user to the player as opposed to mold the player to the user.

I like the concept, personally I would give a "bonus" depending on your style. A bit more precision and power if you prefer playing that shot instead of another. Why not, inside the rally, giving more precision/power as the exchange continues to avoid longer rallies ?
