Calling all the squeamish people.

Postby J. Grilo » Fri, 20 Jun 2014 23:13

Everyone know these situations:

1.) 6:5; 30:40, setpoint for Player B. We see a long rally and all of a sudden: netcord! Player B get the set. Player A just thinks: "I can't believe this trash! That was so typical and of course it happens on a such important situation. It was purpose of the opponent!

2.) There is a long rally, Player A pushes hard and control this point. Player B just defends and all of a sudden: His return lands exactly on the line! Player A just hit the ball and Player B makes easily the point. "It was purpose for sure!"

3.) Similar situation as 1.) & 2.), only with one (or more) big lag(s). Player A lost the point: "It's so unfair, this always happen to me! On normal conditions, i would win this thing, the opponent is so lucky!"

I understand, when people are angry about these stuff. I catch myself too, acting like a fool, while getting mad, sometimes. But i really try hard to control myself and it works!

Recently, it happens more often, that i play against players acting like this. I'm honest, it bothers me more and more, because it destroyes the mood for nothing.

I wanna give you one tip to provide this:

There are things in tennis (and in real-life) which you can't change, also when you get angry. When the opponent gets the point, because of the netcord: That's tennis! When you loose a point, because his return touches the line: That's tennis! You have to learn to deal with it. This even happens on "practice" matches. When you or i loose a match, then it is a natural thing, it's part of the game! A game is there for having fun.

This have many positive side effects:

- Your mood isn't depentent of the game.
- It's good for your health.
- You can have the chance, having nice conversations with your opponent, who can give you tips or the other way round.

I know, that the human mindset is silly, when the person gets angry and some people might say things, which are stupid and i try to ignore such statements or trying not taking this to serious or personally. But it is still annoying and this is a point, that nobody needs.

I'm sure, that there are some people, which things the same, so: Just play matches against people with - at least - a "good" reputation. Everyone which have a less good reputation, don't need to think, that they are disadvantaged. It isn't really THAT hard to get a good reputation.

I agree with you but reputation is not always the best way to prevent these situations nor the fairest one: sometimes you "get bad" just because you won. Downvoting is a double-edged weapon.

I can only speak for myself, but i can't remember, that i had a bad experiance with people with good reputation. But you are right of course with your last point. Sometimes my reputation (in %) went under 70%. It changes from 65% to 100% in my case.

Maybe it helps, when people asks for some matches on the chat. There are a lot of fair players.

Good post ! Being able to recover mentally from some "wtf situations" like netcords, deep shots landing on baseline is a key success factor on the tour

Luck is part of the game. There's no one to blame. Suck it up and keep fighting. For those who can't controle themselves just take 2 deep breaths and stop acting like little pricks that you probably are. Extra tip - stop doing any gestures except raising hands after net cords.
