Footwork?

Any tips on how to improve my footwork in TS4? It seems like good players have mastered this aspect of the game, however I wasn't even really aware that it was important. The way I've been playing I simply run to the ball and hit it. What should I be doing differently?

If you hit perfect your player will run with more speed. This is my simple feeling
Autoreposition is a part of this game I dont know.
