They could improve the second serve a lot by just not allowing you to use flat serves. They might still be accurate, but at least you'd have an idea what the pace was going to be.

Yeah...that would be a bit of a compromise (since many ATP players do occasionally hit 1st serves as a 2nd serve, especially on 40-0 points), but it would improve things for sure..

Or they could just make the second serve harder to pull of. By making the window smaller. Easier to hit out...

at moment the 1 serve is exactly same than second serve ,
think the best is to make the 2second serve more weak, with lower power ,lower angles ,maybe not allowing stickserve with second serve .
so we see not so much unrealistic aces on second serve.

only to make the serve in generell harder .............. i don´t know ,this will be fixing the 2serve problem .

Yes they only need to make serving in general more difficult. Even without much practice it's easy to hit the lines with full power serves at around 90% accuracy - that's a very poor system for a game that attempts to be any level of sim.

If you fix the difficulty in serving so that a full power serve always carries some risk, then the second serve problem is solved also. I have no problem with a person trying a full serve on their second, this is a legit strategy in real tennis as the risk vs reward is there. Currently it's just too uncommon to miss two serves in a row, so second service means nothing.

There absolutely would need to be a limit on the second serve otherwise it's completely pointless having it. A second serve is essentially a weaker shot so it makes perfect sense to restrict it (since reducing the domination of the serve is the aim here). Otherwise, we'd end up with players going for stats like 98 first serve, 90 second serve, 90 power and we'd be right back to where we started.

That they'd 'lose' points on other attributes would mean virtually nothing, as we've already established with the existing format.

when i play matches i always handicap myself on 2nd serve by hitting only topspin serves, sometimes slice serves. It put me in a weaker position but i dont care. It just gets on my nerves when i play someone with huge serve and power levels and they hit a 230km/h 2nd serve on the line. True skills lie elsewhere than trying to win like that.

I don't see it as a handicap Tenjin... I do the same thing and if the placement is good, you'll get an "ok" return to work with.

Yeah, actually the weakest returns I usually get are from kick serves into the body.

I actually use mostly kickservice on 2nd serve, but that's because I find it the easiest serve to pull off with the stick.
