Volley Timing

Postby Imatk » Fri, 22 Jul 2011 16:24

Ok does anyone out there have a tip for consistent volley timing?

I can play a match and get "Perfect" and "Good" and it feels like I'm volleying the ball the EXACT SAME WAY and getting "Too Late" or "Too Soon."

Other than the obvious easy sitter that hangs in the air that you can put away with a volley it seems like there is no rhyme or reason for why the timing differs.

Or I'm simply not seeing it for some reason.

If anyone has any tips I'm all ears.

I've tried moving closer to net... moving a bit back from net... being right on top of net and I still get the same inconsistency.

For ground strokes I can tell why I hit a shot with bad timing and correct it, but with volleys I just can't seem to figure out what the difference is.

Doesn't matter who I've played with.

I've played with a complete serve volley player that had like 98 on the volley or something all the way down to someone with very little volley skill.

In both cases there is no consistency as to when to time the ball so that you get a "good" or "perfect" volley, at least as far as I can tell. It almost seems arbitrary.

Even if the ball is a "sitter" and an easy put away there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason as to why one volley is "Perfect" and another one is "Too Soon" or "Too Late."

I usually tap it about when the ball is on my opponents service line, more or less depending fast/slow balls.

Ok so you don't hold it down?

I've been holding it down and maybe that's the problem?

This is the problem for sure. As a regular shot, you must release the button with good or perfect timing on volleys. If not, you´ll always throw some crap to the other side.

In addition, if you hold down volleys you can't decide what volley use depending on the opp's stroke, you just choose the volley before the opp starts the shot, so probably you'll do the wrong volley.
In addition, when you charge a volley, your player goes very slow to prepare the shot, so don't hold down volleys first of all when you do s&v or when you rush to the net, because you can be forced to a middle court volley instead of a simple volley next to the net.
