All Rounder Help

Postby RainingAmoeba79 » Wed, 29 Jun 2011 15:04

Well, I am trying to make a switch to an all rounder playstyle from S and V, with an eye towards serve and volley. The setup i have come up with has 75 volley, and i use it pretty well in my service games. But when i am recieving, I seem to get stuck at the baseline, even if i am dominating, and i cant seem to take it into offense and get to net. how can I take control of a rally, and how do i approach the net? THX!

You'll need the volley shots artist skill. With this skill you can afford to keep your volley stat under 70 so will have points left to give to other attributes. Try Matthew Grody or Liseth Aguilar as coaches.

Are you playing from behind the baseline? It's easier to approach when you are inside the baseline hitting half volleys.

Also, you can't expect to volley down on your first volley. Much of the time you'll take the first volley low and near the service line. Control or Drop volleys are best for this type of situation, save the Power volleys for when you have your opponent crushed and you just need to finish him off. Actually, Control volleys are almost always as good or better than Power and Standard volleys, it's puzzling to me that none of the SVers I come across ever use them.

If you're taking the ball early inside the baseline and you're not getting blown of the court by your opponent then it should be pretty easy to get to the net on your terms. If, however, your opponent is good and he has a substantially better groundy/power combo then you, then you're pretty much screwed. Your best hope is a kamikazee approach: Basically, just approach on any decent shot. If you approach down the line and follow the ball to the net then you'll at least have a play on the ball SOME of the time. Don't make the mistake of trying to cover both line and angle in this situation. You HAVE to cheat one side or the other, otherwise you won't have a play on either pass unless your opponent miss-times his shot.

This strategy works best against players who try to angle you to death. Just camp the angle, approach with a slice up the line and cover one side of the court.

Another thing you can do specifically against good defensive baseliners (the bane of any Svers existence) is to move all the way forward to return serve. Because of their poor serve/power combo, you can return effectively from this position, which takes time away from your opponent and forces weaker first strikes. Again you'll have to guess, but if you get to the first ball and hit a good half volley then you'll be in excellent position to move forward to the net. (One funny thing, I've actually volley-returned a serve once, lol. It was against a button-tap serve by a Drew Welch player).

What are the full stats of the player you are using, if I may ask?

Im afraid i didnt meake my ques clear. I was asking for tips on how to use an all rounder effectively, esp from former or current al rounders. Also, if i try to stand inside the baseline, then my control shots make the shots weak, and i dont have power. I used to be a S and Ver, but i am sick of not getting into return games as well. i have 75 volley, and ok groundies.

can you list all of your stats when you can and the setup (8/7/5 for example)?
Seems I can't cross that threshold just yet :(

I'm a S&V and I have played as an all rounder before, so I think I know your play style fairly well. If your stuck at the baseline, the best thing to do is to be patient and wait for a short ball to approach on. If you aren't getting many chances to get to the net, try to hit a controlled slice approach shot down the line. This gives you plenty of time to come in and it also reduces the amount of angles your opponent has.

When it is your service game it's good to rush the net, but keep your opponent guessing. Sometimes I like to use the S&V modifier for my serve and then stay at the baseline. The returner will likely expect you to rush the net, which causes him to give you a low ball that is easy to hit an approach shot off of. This will make the opponent question whether he should hit the return deep to keep you at the baseline or hit it low to give you a tougher volley. This will make serve and volleying much easier as an all rounder.

Yes, I use that trick too,it helps!

However, the thing is that i dont have like pure s and v stats, so just randomly rushing to net seems dumb.

Shouldnt I get my opponent in a bad position first and then go to net?

And how do i go about doing this.

come into net when your near the baseline or off short balls being and all rounder works if ur tactics are good. im playing the WT i have a 19-5 record with my axel mingnolet 9/2/9 setup it gives you good speed, power, volleys, and reflexes and i win 26/30 points at net by hitting slice approaches and mixing the serve when i serve volley.
