Are you playing from behind the baseline? It's easier to approach when you are inside the baseline hitting half volleys.
Also, you can't expect to volley down on your first volley. Much of the time you'll take the first volley low and near the service line. Control or Drop volleys are best for this type of situation, save the Power volleys for when you have your opponent crushed and you just need to finish him off. Actually, Control volleys are almost always as good or better than Power and Standard volleys, it's puzzling to me that none of the SVers I come across ever use them.
If you're taking the ball early inside the baseline and you're not getting blown of the court by your opponent then it should be pretty easy to get to the net on your terms. If, however, your opponent is good and he has a substantially better groundy/power combo then you, then you're pretty much screwed. Your best hope is a kamikazee approach: Basically, just approach on any decent shot. If you approach down the line and follow the ball to the net then you'll at least have a play on the ball SOME of the time. Don't make the mistake of trying to cover both line and angle in this situation. You HAVE to cheat one side or the other, otherwise you won't have a play on either pass unless your opponent miss-times his shot.
This strategy works best against players who try to angle you to death. Just camp the angle, approach with a slice up the line and cover one side of the court.
Another thing you can do specifically against good defensive baseliners (the bane of any Svers existence) is to move all the way forward to return serve. Because of their poor serve/power combo, you can return effectively from this position, which takes time away from your opponent and forces weaker first strikes. Again you'll have to guess, but if you get to the first ball and hit a good half volley then you'll be in excellent position to move forward to the net. (One funny thing, I've actually volley-returned a serve once, lol. It was against a button-tap serve by a Drew Welch player).
What are the full stats of the player you are using, if I may ask?
