help again...pushers?!?

Postby el duuderino » Wed, 13 Jul 2011 08:22

alright, i am a self confessed tennis geek as well. and i remember a very annoying group of players when i was young that were referred to as pushers. they would simply run everything down and push the ball back deep and annoy the ever lovin sh!t out of everyone. and now to my dismay, it seems as tho topspin 4 has included this player type in its gameplay.

i have played a few people tonight with like 85-95 forehand + 85 backhand, 100 + speed, and reach swings expert + drop shot artist.

so the basic gameplay from them seems to be to just keep pushing each and every shot back as deep and as angled as possible, i hit a tremendous amount of shots in the air within a foot of the baseline, and then just wait out an error from the opponent trying to overhit or finding an easy opening for a put away.

my question is, how do you counter this, i split 4 or so matches with these type setups tonight, and i just had no idea how to counter the depth and slowness of most of the shots, by the time i hit the ball, they were right in the center of the court for perfect hitting position. i tried topspin deep with power, control topspin shot deep, shot angled. i tried heavy power shots down the line, cross court, control shots cross court and down the line, and nothing really penetrated. for the most part, they were able to run down everything and some had characters who just completely teleported from one place on the court to another when it looked like they was NO WAY they could run a ball down. just lookin for some more strategies. i guess the only thing i didn't really try was mixing in some short slice shots. thanks again everyone.

btw, i play with shot counter + semi-volley king. 88 power, 85 forehand, 65 backhand, 59 serve.

Honestly these people annoy the heck out of me too. A strategy that seems to work for me is this. Most of these guys will be kinda far behind the baseline. If not try to push them behind the baseline. Then try hitting a short slice angle (crosscourt usually, or down the line) to bring them into the court. Now here's the tricky part. You have to then try to anticipate where they'll try to hit a winner: like if they will go down the line, or go for the annoying *** crosscourt angle (more likely). Then hit the ball into the open court (deep control top spin shot typically). They'll probably catch on and change things up like if they have the drop shot artist skill, watch for an attempt at a dropper (stand literally on the baseline to give yourself the best chance at getting either 3 of their shots). With your setup i think its possible for you to do this. I'm all around with a hint of S&V and since i can't S&V against these types of players i have to somehow beat them from the baseline :P

Hope this helps! :D See you on tour! 8)

Try to use insideout swings to create deceptive shots down the line and crosscourt.

Pushing isn't that huge in this game compared to TS3 i guess do to the lack of errors in this game. The update helped this a little but they still are lacking in my eyes. Pushers can still be easily overpowered for the most part and you can push them right back as well.

What? I don´t remember any (successful) players using a pusher in TS3. It was all risk all the time for the top players. Which was necessary, because the vast majority of people made their characters with stamina at 40 (30 for wt).

well the way Mack2300 explained it sounded lie it was very sucessful. He said pushing for him was very easy due to the fact that errors were actually present.

I have no idea though. TS4 is my first console tennis game.

Ah yes, I guess mack and also moralspain did play with that sort of player. But they were definitely the exception.

Yep, pusher king of TS3! It was an incredibly effective way to play and it was very satisfying to force your opponent into errors.
I haven't seen effective pushers in ts4 yet, though this could change. Serve and volley kills them. You don't want to get caught up in slugging it out from the baseline as any short ball and they will make you pay for it. So yeah dropshots(not too many though to avoid cheesy play) and net play is a very effective strategy against them.

if you hit a short angles FH slice, that is just cheap. when do you ever see a pro hit a short angles forehand slice?

I agree coolhand. Well any offensive slice in this game is cheesy  Slices in this game are just a tad insane if you ask me!

Love being a pusher with Becker (rovex91 here on 360) it's hilarious seeing people persistently attempting to hit through you to no avail.

Becker is a beast, didn't expect him to be good at that play but he's proven otherwise.

Previously was all out attack until I lost against a pusher and since then victories against almost everyone on 2K open (including Nvrotik (SP?).
