Pinging and connection confusion

I'm a little new to messing around with my computer software and things. I noticed that the red ping and no ping seem to be bad. My question is I saw Djarvik online last night and I know he is in New York and I am in Mass. I played someone else from New York last night (though lag was so bad that ball never bounce, it was still fun), but Djarvik never ping so I could see him in que but could not play him. I open the ports though my personal firewall but noticed that after game, in order to use internet effectively I had to reclose my ports. Anyone can help as I'm kinda new at this kind of stuff. Would a graphics card help if I purchased one? If so, any recommendations?

With the ping question, this happened with me and Djarvik. I was really surprised. So, I thought to close my port on the modem, save, open the port on the modem, save it again, then finally reboot the modem.

This worked. I guess we have to do things special to play Djarvik, the quick demi-god of DMT.

Anyways normally the ports dont matter for online play.

The only matter if you want to host a match.

That's what I think.

The reason that your ports are closed again is maybe that you didnt safe it will on your modem. Be sure to safe your settings so next time it's not closed again?
