Am I a counterpuncher?

Postby willjonesjrSUSPENDED » Sat, 02 Oct 2010 01:03

Just played hemingwayernest on WT and he beat me 4-3, 4-3. He is a big server, goes for broke on the return and is a hard hitter with few opportunities to rally.

Stats
H Me
First Serve % 92 93
1st serve % 94 66
2nd serve % 100 34
Aces 17 0
Double Fault 0 1
Winners 45 3
Unforced Errors 5 2
Break point 0/2 0/0
Points won 52 34

How did i take it to two tiebreakers with only 3 winners?!?! It is no secret that I choose to play without alot of power but I never considered myself a retriever. I'm stumped. :?:

Make a 6'9 332lbs player with 4x90 and 80 and you will hit close to as many winners as he did. Seriously.

I will reserve my opinion about your game thou  it seems like most times I voice it I end up upsetting someone, so I will skip.

P.S. - you did get better then say a few month ago.

lol yeah I can completely relate to you willjonesjr. I also have a strange knack for winning matches with embarrassingly few winners compared to my opponents. I dread to say the "P" word so yeah I like to think I'm just a counterpuncher too :P

Thanks Mack!

If you experience it then I suppose I'm in good company! It's tough for us players who just don't like playing with power. But somehow we make it happen little by little. I still don't see myself as a counterpuncher or a pusher but if that is what I am then so it is! Djarvik always beats me but I think I had a match point once on WT against him and RobITST and they just played amazing and turned it around and won. Those two players are just masters at this game! :D

well, I guess my 40-90 set up would suggest that I do play with a lot of power as my stats are pretty stacked  but I think it is deceptive :P I play mostly with lt and B(topspin) cross-court angles which is the bread and butter of my game. I look to rally and open the court up and only go for a risk winner if I am very sure that I will win the point. Usually what happens is that I force my opponent into making errors before I get the chance to make a winner. I am prepared to rally opponents to death but again I don't think that makes a pusher..well I hope not lol

Well you're still good but to play 90-40 is well...power baseliner period. I play with 70 power and will probably bring it down to the 60's. Power just isn't my thing and I think I maybe add a nice change from the players who rely so heavily on power. I haven't won a match yet on itst but I'm convinced of perfecting my style. :D I'm no counter-puncher though

Just to clarify

Counter-puncher - very little errors, decent amount of winners.

Pusher - very little errors and very little winners.

pretty much. hewitt in his heyday was the best example of a counterpuncher. grind you down, but if he sees a opening, its a winner. Remember, they are counterPUNCHING. absorbing your best then hitting you with the KO blow. pushers are more like homer simpson in that simpsons episode, taking your best then making you lunge for a huge KO shot, but you miss and fall over.

Man I just watched the episode where Homer tries to give up beer for a month. That show was (<--operative word) seriously great.
