Serve & Volley - HELP

Postby Baghdad Baghdatis » Sun, 29 Nov 2009 15:12

Hey all,

Right I am sure this question has been answered in another thread but need some advice.

I want to start serve & volleying in a the odd point here and there to mix it up.

I know you hold down RB whilst your serving and my guy flies to the net but how the devil do you the hit the ball???

I have tried pressing whatever button but my guy doesn't even swing for it.

Any ideas? Rob ITST? anyone?

Many Thanks
Baghdad

You need to be in good position (i.e, 'locked onto' the path of the ball, not in a position where you will be lunging for the volley), and you need to press the button for the volley when the ball is really quite close to your character, say....3-5 'feet' in front of your character?

TAP the button for volleys, don't hold.

I guess I"m not the best at explaining it, but I'm not a terrible volleyer

if you press the button and your guy doesnt swing, press it again. I do that sometimes to make sure he hits the ball

Serve and volleying without a s&v setup is very hard. i find hitting a slice into the persons body helps, it usually gives a down the middle response which is easy to volley. This works for me on PS3 anyway

Thanks all. Coke, please accept my apology for the other thread, i got a bit carried and away and got too involved.

I have nothing really against you, only a few comments here and there that annoyed me a bit but i can forget about them.

Truce?

Nice job guys on the truce. That's a good example for everyone, so well done there.

Now on topic. Baghdad, you use Roddick's serve, correct? The first thing you need to do is figure out WHEN you can s&v with that motion. Almost any serve into the ad court is fine, but when you try it in the deuce court you need to do it with serve that your opponent usually returns crosscourt. Roddick's motion runs too far to the forehand side after the serve to use it consistently for s&v.

He does get in close to the net, and you are only using it as a surprise attack, so you can definitely work around that flaw. (BTW: It makes the motion my favorite for doubles, since you only cover half the court.)

One thing that will help you is to resist trying to control your movement as you come to net - just let the animation take you there. Try playing around with when you release RB, that can affect your players response to the incoming ball.

Do as Jaylove said and tap the button. And what Vieira said actually does work too. When I first started the game, I would sometimes tap the button repeatedly - it's not the best way, but it helps you figure out the timing, and it REALLY helps if you expect a risk return. With your serve though, you need to come in with the mind-set that it will not be a risk return - be prepared for an easier volley and you'll be playing the percentages.

serve volleying is tough, as coke said you need a good volley stat to pull it off regualrly, at least 75 i would say. MY 90/40 setup has 90 on serve and volley and is pretty much geared into not losing serve and nicking a few tiebreak points, but i do break occasionally. me and brgerflipr have had some good battles. If you like message parsons cfc, he hits some INSANITY volleys with nalbandian

Despite my serve, I love to attempt some serve and volley play every now and again. I think the key is to not overplay the volley..like not to hold the buttons down for too long and use the risk buttons. Like Jaylove said, just tapping the buttons is enough to produce a sufficient volley.

Yeah not only that (sufficient), it really produces a much better volley than holding the buttons, once you 'master' it. You get more pop, better angles, etc etc. It really feels much like volleying in real life once you get the hang of it.

Also, I almost never hit a non-risk volley, nor do I really ever use only RT on the volleys. It's either LT or LT+RT.

I would offer some advice but i hear off cross platform players that the volleying physics are a bit different on ps3 and xbox, some say its harder on xbox, others say the more lag on ps3 makes it harder on there for example.

i found out (for me anyways) that i S&V way better on the ad side than the deuce side. I use serve motion A.

Perhaps it's any use to you.
