I heard the towel trick melts down the thermal compound inside the console. I'm just not trying to void a warranty on a system that belongs to my roomate. ;-)

Well, I'm pretty sure microsoft is pretty lenient as long as you don't actually open your console. That is an automatic warranty void, but if you don't want to I wouldn't blame you. I've been doing it for the past two weeks and it works like a charm! I'm just gonna wait it out until I can buy a new console, because the wait for a new console is like 4-8 weeks or something. But their new policy is anyone who's warranty has expired is good again if you get the red lights, from what I hear.

I had an overheating problem (half red ring). I could play for a while but then the console would just shut down. I did notice that my power brick was much hotter than the console itself. I solved the overheating problem by moving the power brick off the carpeting - put it on a (wood) shelf. Since then, it's all good.

I have a feeling it's not that. This thing happens within 2 minutes of turning on the system, plus my power box is just sitting on a table. The fan starts getting real loud and going crazy. I honestly just think something got whacky and the whole cooling system is shot.
